Exciting Launch of Praesidium

Praesidium reaches its sixth edition, and with it a renewed determination to think clearly and independently about the forces remaking global affairs and security. The world these pages examine is one of sharpening rivalry, blurred lines between civilian and military domains, and dependencies that bind adversaries as tightly as they divide them. Against that backdrop, our purpose remains what it has always been: to cut through noise and offer depth, rigour, and perspective on how power is exercised in the twenty-first century.

This edition opens at sea, where much of today's competition now plays out below the threshold of open war. It begins with the gray-zone logistics of the South China Sea, where civilian fleets, fishing swarms, and commercial shipping have become instruments of coercion, before turning to the 2026 U.S.–Iran conflict that runs through much of the volume: the paralysis of the Strait of Hormuz and its reverberations across energy markets and the contest between petro-dollar and petro-yuan; a reflection on how political leadership can turn battlefield victory into strategic defeat; and the untested legal frontier occupied by commercial satellite operators drawn into that same war. From there the volume widens its aperture, examining Pakistan's calculus of ambiguity between Washington and Beijing, the rise of crewed-uncrewed teaming in air combat, Italy's tilt toward the Indo-Pacific, and the enduring (if transformed) doctrine of submarine warfare. It closes on the structural foundations of power: the weaponisation of supply chains and the industrial base of deterrence, energy security and the nuclear turn in the Arctic, and the demographic fragility that quietly conditions Russia's ability to inhabit its own strategic North. Taken together, these contributions show how logistics, geography, technology, and industrial capacity are becoming inseparable from the exercise of power itself.

Join the Conversation

Praesidium has found its readers among those who live these questions daily - analysts, scholars, students, and professionals who expect more than headlines. The conversation does not stop here. It is on our site and social channels that arguments get tested, sharpened, and answered. If something here stuck with you, that's where to carry it forward.

Looking Ahead

The strategic, technological, and environmental shifts now underway are not passing turbulence; they are redrawing the terms on which power is held and contested. Praesidium will keep tracking them closely, giving space to original research, contrasting arguments, and analysis that takes the long view. The question that guides us stays the same: what power, security, and responsibility come to mean in a world that refuses to stand still.

Thank you for reading.

Exciting Launch of Praesidium

We are proud to present the fifth edition of Praesidium, a new milestone in our ongoing commitment to cultivate rigorous, independent thinking on the forces reshaping global affairs and security. As the international system grows more fragmented, digitised, and contested, this volume continues our mission to provide clarity, depth, and critical perspective on the dynamics that define power in the twenty-first century.

This edition explores how contemporary power is being reshaped at the intersection of geopolitics, technology, and security. From the silent transformation of global logistics and defence supply chains to debates on AI governance, cyber posture, and Europe’s search for resilience amid conflict and regulatory acceleration, the volume traces the growing strategic weight of digital infrastructures. It also moves across the Arctic’s rising relevance, climate-induced mobility, and new resource dependencies, showing how control over data, technology, and critical materials is redefining sovereignty; and how geography, innovation, and security are becoming increasingly inseparable.

Exciting Launch of Praesidium

We are proud to announce the release of the fourth edition of Praesidium, marking a further stride in our mission to foster rigorous and independent thinking on the dynamics reshaping the international order.

This volume opens with a compelling feature by Michele Di Gennaro, 1st Lieutenant of the Italian Army, whose extensive experience in cyber-security, operational planning and strategic transformation brings fresh insight into the nexus of digital technology and modern power.

The issue explores the shifting frontiers of global power, from the emergence of the Arctic as a digital and strategic hub to Europe’s financial and technological rearmament, and the growing convergence of energy, climate, and security. Through analyses spanning the geopolitics of lithium, data sovereignty, and new resource dependencies, this edition reveals how technology and geography are reshaping the foundations of influence in the twenty-first century
